To all parents, new and old, we want to welcome you to another year at Sir Oliver Mowat Collegiate Institute and invite you to join us! The minutes from our our last meeting are attached and include the dates for all of this years meetings. In addition, I wanted to provide you with a general introduction of who and what your school council is.
What does School Council do? Its purpose is really quite simple; to advise the principal and the Board on a variety of issues and activities relating to student achievement, curriculum goals and priorities, school budget priorities, school safety, renovation plans, after school activities, and criteria for the selection of new principals.
Who is involved? The School Council is composed of a broad representation of members of your school community including parents, staff and student representatives, appointed community members, the principal, and a general membership which includes all parents of children attending the school!
Why should you get involved? School Councils are an excellent way for you to get involved in your child`s education, meet the principal and teachers and share your views with other interested members of the school community.
When are the meetings? Your School Council meets once per month at 7:00 in the School Library on the dates listed in the minutes. An Agenda is sent out by e-mail beforehand and all are welcome.
One of our most important goals this year is to engage as many parents in the school community as we can, so that they can also benefit from school involvement. Please help us to spread the word by forwarding this message to other parents in the school or sending them to the school council website below. There you will find additional information about how to improve your child’s success at Mowat.
In addition to the minutes, link, here is a link to a form, School Statement of Needs (SSON), requesting confidential input from you regarding the hiring criteria for the next Mowat Principal. A completed sample SSON form is available here. This is not a requirement, but only a request. If you are interested, please take a moment and fill in the blanks in the form and e-mail it back, or bring it to the next council meeting. It is a great opportunity to influence the leadership in your child’s school.
Lastly, If you would like to request to add an agenda item to one of our future meetings, please just send me a message.
Thank-you for your interest and we look forward to seeing you at the next meeting!
